Optical communication is indispensable for the switching technology that distributes the signal transmitted by the optical fiber according to the object. In the case of existing optical switches, the allocation takes several milliseconds to several microseconds; in the future, high-speed communication is required to be shortened to a few nanoseconds. The research team prototyped a simple switch that distributes input signals with materials such as compound semiconductors and InAlGaAs that are suitable for controlling high-speed signals and miniaturization. The substrate material is supplied by Hitachi. Specifically, the optical signal is split into two paths, and if electrons are injected from the electrodes only in a single path, the direction of propagation of the light varies. These lights are then re-overlapping to allow them to output signals only in the desired direction.
Conventional semiconductor switches, because of the polarization of the input light, will cause the output signal quality to be degraded; Professor Yugao and others will dig deep into a part of the semiconductor, and work hard to study the design of the switch to reduce the influence of polarized light. Regardless of whether the light vibrates in any direction, vertical or horizontal, it can be distributed with high precision. It is said that the allocation time is also greatly reduced to about 3 nanoseconds.
With the new switch, the power required to control the signal is about 5mW, which is less than 1/10 of the original. In the future, even if the amount of information in the optical network increases, it is expected that the power consumption of information machines, communication networks, and the like can be controlled. The research team will continue to research and improve to prevent the attenuation of the optical signal caused by the switch. It is expected to be put into practical use around 2010.
