New cancer therapies: it's good to stick a "band-aid"

A few days ago, MIT scientists developed a new type of patch that can directly release drugs for tumor sites, combine gene and light therapy, and effectively reduce the size of tumors. This three-pronged approach not only treats tumors, but also effectively avoids the side effects of systemic therapy on the body and prevents the recurrence and metastasis of cancer.

According to the introduction, the main principle of this new type of patch triple therapy is that the patch contains a rod-shaped gold nanorod. Near-infrared radiation can make this material hot, thermal ablation treatment or destroy the tumor. In addition, these nanorods are also equipped with chemotherapeutic drugs. When the nanorods get hot, these drugs are released to target the tumor and its surrounding cells.

In addition, this "Band-aid" also includes another gold nanosphere, whose role is to inhibit important oncogenes in colorectal cancer.

At present, this technique has been successfully tested in mice with colorectal cancer, and the recurrence rate of cancer relative to the control group is as high as 40%, and no recurrence occurs in the experimental group using the patch.

Researcher Natalie Artzi said that he hopes to experiment with this technique in a larger model, even with a colonoscope for cancer diagnosis.

This patch can be applied to the treatment of some early cancers, or to reduce the tumor before surgery, and it is a minimally invasive treatment.
