Stanford University uses Apple Watch's built-in sensors to monitor user rhythms

Stanford University School of Medicine said in a press release issued that day that it would use sensors from Apple Watches to collect heart rhythm abnormal data. The sensor at the bottom of the Apple Watch can monitor the flow of blood through the wrist with green LEDs and photodiodes that flash hundreds of times per second, collecting signals from four different points on the user's wrist.

On the same day, Apple released specialized analysis software that analyzes the data collected by Apple Watches to distinguish between heart rhythms and other "murmurs" to identify problems such as abnormal heart rhythms. If a problem is found, the user's Apple Watch and Apple phone will receive a warning message.

Stanford University School of Medicine says it will explore whether the system can be used to prevent atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is prone to thrombosis, which leads to stroke and heart failure. In the United States, atrial fibrillation causes approximately 130,000 deaths each year and 750,000 hospitalizations. Many of the patients have no obvious symptoms, so they are often not diagnosed.
