Singapore Nanda R&D Supercapacitor Charges Faster and Free to Bend

Recently, according to Singapore's "Lianhe Zaobao" report, the Singapore research team has developed a power supply that can be easily stretched and bent, and it is expected to replace the battery in the future to power wearable devices such as smart watches, heart rate trackers or smart glasses.

This supercapacitor was developed by a team of researchers at Nanyang Technological University for two years. Unlike other supercapacitors on the market, the new capacitors are like fabrics that can be easily stretched or bent or tailored to different needs without compromising power supply.

Existing capacitors can only be manufactured in a fixed design and structure, and are also more difficult to match with other electronic devices.

The new capacitors are made of reinforced manganese dioxide nanowire composites, which contain carbon nanotubes and nanocellulose fibers, allowing the capacitor to withstand multiple stretches during fabrication.

Professor Chen Xiaodong, the deputy dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at NTU, who led the team, pointed out that supercapacitors function like batteries, but the charging process is faster than normal batteries.

He said: "Depending on the size of the supercapacitor, the charging time can be as long as seven or eight minutes, and soon it can be less than one minute."

When the new capacitor is braided into a honeycomb structure, it can store up to three times more power than a typical capacitor. Not only that, the new capacitors can still reach 98% of the original capacity after 10,000 times of expansion and contraction.

Dr. Luo Xianjun, Director of the Department of Soft Materials, Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, a new research, is one of the research teams.

Luo Xianjun pointed out that the new capacitors not only perform well, but also have the function of “plug and play”. “These flexible power supplies are available for wearable devices and are a new generation of energy storage devices with potential and high scalability.”

According to the team's experiments, the new capacitors and sensors were attached to the elbows, and even if the elbows were constantly shaken, the capacitors were able to supply power stably and smoothly transmit signals to wearable devices, including heart rate trackers.

Chen Xiaodong pointed out that by using existing manufacturing technology, new capacitors can be mass-produced, and the manufacturing cost per square centimeter can be as low as one and three cents.

The team has patented this technology and has discussed the possibility of mass production with some companies.

Chen Xiaodong revealed that the team is trying to use this technology to create a new three-dimensional supercapacitor. He hopes that one day a flexible new capacitor can be combined with a sports or health-care wear sensor.
