The ceramic substrate developed by TDK not only protects the LED, but also increases its brightness by 10%.
The substrate is fabricated and fabricated in a semiconductor-like wafer and has the same function as a varistor. The varistor is used to prevent static electricity, but is generally not used with LEDs.
Zenerdiodes are no longer needed for this new type of substrate. Zener diodes are a separate semiconductor device commonly used in circuits to prevent static electricity. This saves the time and expense of installing a Zener diode, and the new substrate absorbs more light, resulting in an increase in light efficiency of about 10%.
The antistatic and component cost is the same as for a Zener diode.
TDK plans to begin mass production in fiscal 2009 and will provide substrates to semiconductor package manufacturers.
