The Internet of Things (IoT), as a means of connecting devices such as vehicles, wearables, and home appliances, relies on a variety of network technologies, including low-power, wide-area networks designed for a variety of remote, hard-to-reach, and battery-powered IoT devices. AcTIlity is reported to be a founding member of the LoRa Alliance. The alliance provides standards for LoRaWAN, the most widely adopted LPWAN solution. AcTIlity has partnered with industry and telecom industry leaders and implemented smart city projects with Comcast in Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco, and plans to deploy new in 2018.
According to Cameron, LPWAN is designed to communicate remotely with low bit traffic and has very low power consumption in networking devices such as battery-powered sensors. LPWAN is important for the development of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) for two reasons. First, LPWAN can achieve long-term monitoring targets in large areas, such as smart water meter measurement. Secondly, LPWAN only needs to transmit basic data such as opening and closing, temperature, and movement.
And why Actility chose the LoRa method instead of other standards developed by 3GPP. According to Cameron, Actility believes that LoRa and 3GPP's LTE-M and NB-IoT will complement each other in the development of IoT. The trade-off between these two options depends on cost and bandwidth.
LoRaWAN is best suited for urban-intensive environments where millions of connected devices need only occasionally communicate with the network, and communication requires only a small amount of bandwidth, such as smart meters, lighting, waste management, and building management. Use cases such as rodent control. On the other hand, the 3GPP standard is more suitable for monitoring that requires higher bandwidth and very low latency, such as closed circuit television (CCTV), video and connected vehicles.
Actility has developed a 3GPP connector solution that allows the ThingPark Wireless platform to manage data from sensors connected via the 3GPP network. ThingPark Wireless is an item infrastructure, not a human or mobile infrastructure. This means that carriers can avoid expensive personnel-based network elements and take advantage of simpler item infrastructure.
So, whether or not mobile carriers want to use LoRaWAN as an option to use the ThingPark Wireless object infrastructure for LTE or both, Actility can help.
Cameron estimates that IoT will be most interested in oil and gas, smart cities and smart services in the next 18 months. And as more and more companies want to participate as users and solution providers, he doesn't think this will fade quickly.
IoT has two major use cases, including doing things that are done now in a smarter, more efficient way; and new applications that have not been thought of so far, such as rodent control and site equipment monitoring. Due to the economics of LPWAN, these new applications will make sense. Cameron believes that the first use case will be more important in the short term, but the second use case is even more exciting.
Cameron suggested that when considering the use of LPWAN, the ecosystem must be considered first. The questions to be investigated include: where are the options available; how to incorporate them into the product portfolio; how to test to ensure that they are functioning properly; and how to provide them to customers.
Most users will be frustrated at this stage, but Actility offers two key options to reduce or eliminate this pain. The first is the Actility Developer Portal. The site builds an environment for customers and encourages developers to create new solutions, just as Apple does for developers.
