Howe Launches RGB-Ir Sensor OV9738 Based on OmniVision PureCel® Plus Technology

Face recognition and other advanced biometrics are becoming more popular in mobile devices and notebooks, and are gradually replacing password and fingerprint authentication.

OmniVision Technologies today (January 9, 2018) announced the launch of the 1/9" 1.4 micron RGB-Ir sensor OV9738 based on OmniVision PureCel® Plus technology. The OV9738 is available for integrated color and infrared imaging applications. Reduces overall system cost and provides IR-based biometrics for face recognition and gesture interfaces across a range of devices, including mainstream notebooks and mobile devices. The integrated design of the OV9738 also reduces space requirements for aesthetics Industrial design.

Face recognition and other advanced biometrics are becoming more popular in mobile devices and notebooks, and are gradually replacing password and fingerprint authentication. According to market analysts, by 2022, the global face recognition market will reach 7.75 billion US dollars. In addition, the use of gesture recognition for improved user interfaces is a trend. According to a recent report by Variant Market Research, the size of the gesture recognition market is expected to reach $43.6 billion by 2024.

“Notebooks and mobile phone consumers want to replace traditional login methods with facial recognition and other types of advanced biometric authentication technologies,” said Arun Jayaseelan, senior product marketing manager at OmniVision. “Biometric authentication using dual sensor solutions like Windows Hello. Applications are only affordable for high-end notebooks because they require a second dedicated IR camera. With the OV9738, OmniVision offers a single sensor solution for mainstream notebooks."

The OV9738 offers 720 resolution at 30 frames per second. In addition, it uses OmniVision's industry-leading RGB-Ir technology to improve the quantum conversion efficiency of near-infrared light, helping to reduce LED power consumption. At the same time, the OV9738 uses PureCel Plus technology to reduce color crosstalk and help provide the best color reproduction quality.
