Scientists design functional magnetic resonance imaging to treat phobia

According to reports, a new system designed by Japanese and American scientists will bring new hope to phobias. It is based on the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to truly "see" when patients imagine what they are afraid of.

The experimental technology was developed by researchers from the Japan International Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute and the University of California, Los Angeles. First, scientists performed fMRI scans of the brains of 30 mental health test subjects while they were watching images of various animals. This allows scientists to determine which unique patterns of brain activity correspond to images of which organisms are perceived. Despite the physiological differences between all participants, a common identifiable pattern has emerged.

Next, scientists performed fMRI scans of the brains of 17 patients with severe phobias, who had a strong fear of at least two animals, spiders and snakes. The computer will analyze their scan results in real time, and each time it recognizes the brain's "signature" of a terrible creature, the participants are also given a small reward. In this way, they have a positive connection with the animals, and the tests show that they are not so afraid of them later.

Researchers hope that this new technology can be used as a less invasive method for treating phobias, as well as other mental illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

A paper on this research was recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
