Remember the LT painting application TIlt Brush that was popular last year? With TIlt Brush, users can use virtual reality technology to draw in 3D space, and it runs fast, full of immersion, very interesting, and most importantly, it is not complicated to use. As long as you have heard the simple introduction, you can easily Design artwork in three dimensions.
But now you can forget TIlt Brush for a while, because this latest VR painting application, Ghost Paint, may start to occupy your helmet.
At first Ghost Paint was just an interest project of the artist Shane Caudle, but later developed into a complete VR art creation experience. Since 1998, Shane has been working for Epic Games, but this is his first VR project. He said that he was attracted to VR because VR can provide an immersive feeling. He wants to condense his passion for digital entertainment and art into a VR experience.
Ghost Paint is somewhat similar to Kingspray. You can also paint on any surface after wearing a Vive helmet. Painting is very realistic, you can paint on a variety of surfaces - from brick walls, to canvas, to 3D monkey statues without color. There are also a variety of places to choose from, such as alleys, concrete drains and urban buildings, you can graffiti as you wish.
Ghost Paint also offers a very realistic spray gun simulator, which is normal in view of Shane's background. “I used to be a spray gun artist who paints in a shopping mall,†Shane explained. “When I held the Vive controller horizontally, I thought, isn't this a spray gun?†The use of the Vive controller is a bit Like a spray gun, you can move your finger on the touchpad to change the air pressure and control the range and concentration of the paint based on how far it is from the object.
Shane can of course improvise some beautiful works, but what about those graffiti laymen? This app provides some templates, so users can quickly learn to create good graffiti, and don't have to worry about being caught by the police. The stencil looks like it's made of cardboard. I think this design is very good. The app provides a multi-layer stencil so that you can easily create a shading effect, adding depth and detail to your work.
I also like its mirroring feature, you can use this function to get the inverted image, so it is very suitable to create a symmetrical pattern. Once you've finished creating, you can take a 4K screenshot, with different formats and shapes (such as squares), and then you can upload it to Instagram.
Although Ghost Paint feels great and fully functional, Shane says it still has to adjust it, add templates, and do some processing before launch.
Having said that, how is the experience of playing this app? Someone recorded the true feelings:
I stood under the viaduct and held a can of paint in my hand. I look to the left and look to the right. Then start spraying the paintings on the wall.
Of course, I am not worried about being caught by the police. I am even more worried that my arm is in the wrong direction, so that I can overturn my laptop or insert a hole in a painting on the wall. Because I am not graffiti in public, I use the HTC Vive helmet to play a VR app in my living room.
The app's name is GhostPaint and was developed by Epic Games. Currently conducting public beta. Google (microblogging) VR drawing tool TIlt Brush allows you to paint in midair, and Epic's GhostPaint has the same effect.
GordPaint's ability to paint in the air is "coming soon." So I can only paint on the wall now, but I can use a spray gun and spray paint. I try to pick up the spray gun and appreciate its virtual details. It requires two hands to use, just like a real spray gun. Of course, I don't know how to use the spray gun, so I chose the spray paint option. Then I went to the 20-foot-long wall and picked the exact location.
I can hold a prefabricated mold in my left hand and change the mold with a slight flick of my thumb. I have a jar in my right hand. If I want to change the color, I can use a menu floating in the air around me. This kind of two-handed coordination feels just right, more intuitive than a one-handed click or a one-hand touch screen.
The important thing is that this feels good. My mind thinks that the mold and the paint are real. When I subtly adjust the angle of the paint can, I can even tilt the mold. I think that real graffiti may feel like this.
However, GhostPaint lacks the intuitive interface of the Tilt Brush. When using the Tilt Brush, you have a palette in one hand and a brush in the other. And GhostPaint needs you to click on the menu at hand and assign different controls to both hands, which is not very convenient.
Things get more complicated when you want to move. You can be "tipped" to any place in the virtual environment, but you'd better grab that menu first. Otherwise you are sent over and your controls are not keeping up.
I tried GhostPaint for 20 minutes and I feel like it. However, Epic still needs to make some improvements, such as adding more 3D drawing capabilities, simplifying the current interface, and so on. Tilt Brush is easy to master, I have seen that when a dozen people first touched it, they quickly understood how to operate the brush and palette. But GhostPaint is more complicated. It takes about a dozen mini screens to be used before it is used. The only real way to understand all the controls (gestures, triggers, and button blends) is to use this application for a long enough time. Learn by.
In addition, if you remove the most important part of graffiti - counter-cultural ridicule - can it be considered a real graffiti? Graffiti is an illegal art designed to provoke society. So it is created in a dangerous situation, and you are always on the verge of being arrested. Will GhostPaint add elements of this fear? Maybe.
Still, if you have an HTC Vive helmet, try GhostPaint. This app is great, and it will only get better and better. Most importantly, Tilt Brush also needs some competitors. This is not to say that the Tilt Brush is very bad, but because the VR is still in the fledgling stage as a whole, there is still a long way to go before things like VR Photoshop. So more companies need to come up with their best ideas, and only then can VR content creation be on the right track.
